Course objectives
Several political regimes swept across East-Central Europe over the course of the 20th century. Empires crumbled and were replaced by democratic republics, which were superseded by totalitarian regimes resulting in wars, first in World War II and subsequently in Cold War. We will look at the socio-political developments in the region through the prism of gender and sexuality. We will see that one of the most intimate matters (sex) sheds light on one of the most public institutions (the state). We will learn about the crucial role that science and expertise played in shaping sexual and gender norms. We will scrutinize the intersections between expertise, state, and people’s lives. We will pay attention to how sexuality and gender developed in East-Central Europe and how these developments differ from the Western ones. Discussing recent research on gender and sexuality in the region, we will understand the dis/connections both across the Iron Curtain and among the East-Central European countries.
Learning outcomes
Students will understand the dynamics of forming gender and sexuality in the second half of the 20th century. They will be able to identify the similarities and differences between the countries of East-Central Europe and make basic comparisons with the Western developments. They will grasp the foundational role of expert knowledge. They will be able to identify relevant primary data and analyze them, They will be able to present their research project, conduct the analysis and present its results.
