- Course objectives
- Students become known with the core concepts of the “welfare state” theory. On successful completion of the course students should be able to understand basic texts on welfare state theory and should be able to interpret selected social policy program in terms of the welfare state typology by Esping-Andersen.
- Syllabus
- The course is devoted to the following topics and issues:
- 1. Definitions of the “welfare state”.
- 2. Instruments of the welfare state.
- 3. Actors of the welfare state.
- 4. Typology of the welfare state.
- 5. The emergence of the welfare state.
- 6. The development of the welfare state.
- 7. The so called “crisis” of the welfare state and the following developments.
- 8. The history of the welfare state in the Czech society.
- 9. Strategies of the European welfare state and reflecting on the unification process.

- Teaching methods
- The learning outcomes of the course will be attained by means of following teaching methods: 1. lectures, 2. writing essay, 3. writing peer-review.
- Assessment methods
- The course is completed by exam which consists in three parts: 1. Test in literature on definition, instruments and actors of the welfare states. Test consists in four non-standardized questions. Student can gain maximum 4 points for each of them. To be successful student has to gain 9 points. 2. Essay on: „The selected social policy program in terms of typology of welfare states”. Essay is assessed in terms of the ability of student to define indicators and to apply them in identifying selected Czech social policy program inclination to features of “welfare stat regimes”. 3. Review on the selected text on the development of the welfare state. Review is assessed in following terms: a) finding question the selected text is devoted to, b) comparing arguments by the author on the welfare state development with arguments by two another authors, c) selecting argument by the author and explaining how to use it in reflecting the welfare state development. Student can gain maximum 30 points for test as well as for essay. Student can gain maximum 60 points for review. In sum, student can gain maximum 120 points. To finish the course successfully student has to gain minimum 80 points.
