- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives
- The goal is to deepen the knowledge and skills that allow students to use the problem-solving theory and the theory of negotiation and conflict resolution in the field of counselling and mediation when working with clients. At the same time, the emphasis is on mediation as a process in which a social worker - mediator mediates negotiations between the disputing parties and helps them reach a mutually acceptable agreement. The course includes a presentation of mediation and practical training of selected mediator skills using examples.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students should be able to understand the theoretical, methodical and practical basis of conflict resolution and negotiation in social work, to reflect the process of negotiation and mediation and his/her communication and negotiation skills and develop and flourish his/her negotiation strategies for helping clients and promoting the mission of social work in postmodern society.

- Negotiation and mediation - history, importance of negotiation and mediation at the turn of the time, institutional and legislative background
- Mediation as mediation, representation and negotiation in various areas of social work
- Characteristics of basic approaches in the field of negotiation and mediation - evaluative and facilitative mediation
- Characteristics of basic approaches in the field of negotiation and mediation - transformative, restorative and narrative mediation
- Relationship and values - forms of relationship, relationship as a working alliance; the importance of values
- Facilitative mediation - demonstration, mediation technique - phases, mediator's role
- Conflict theory - functions, sources, cycle, methods of conflict resolution
- Negotiation theory - distributive and constructive, basic characteristics
- Constructive negotiation: separating people from the problem; separation of positions and interests; searching for alternatives; using objective criteria
- The basic phase of the mediation process

- lecture, reading, discussions, practical training in mediators´ skills, mediation record´ reflection
- Assessment methods
- Continuous reading of assigned literature (approx. 130 pages of Czech text and approx. 80 pages of English text - 1 credit), audiovisual creation on the topic (creation of a video recording of mediation - 1 credit) and essay (reflection of the process and result of audiovisual creation using compulsory reading in the range of approx. 8 standard pages - 1 credit), final written exam - test (10 open-ended questions, you need to get at least 18 out of 30 points - 1 credit). Activity at seminars and mandatory participation of at least 80% is required (1 credit).
