- Course objectives
- The course focuses on the interpretation and analysis of German foreign and security policy. Emphasis is in particular placed on the German foreign and security policy after the reunification, whereby certain attention is paid to historical themes as well. In the analysis of German foreign and security policy, theoretical concepts of “power”, “civil power” and “trading state” are used. In terms of methodology, the method of historical description and comparative analysis are used particularly.
The aims of the course is to enable students to get a data basis relating to the German foreign policy, to strengthen their understanding of the historical context of Germany's foreign policy, to define the main differences in comparison with other European powers, and to analyze its basic current trends on the basis of the theory of international relations. - Syllabus
- 1. Introductory lesson, introduction of the literature, assignment of the presentations.
- 2. German foreign and security policy until 1945.
- 4. Basic trends of German foreign and security policy during the Cold War era.
- 5. Theoretical concept of a civilian power in the analysis of German foreign and security policy.
- 6. Basic trends of German foreign and security policy after the reunification of the country.
- 7. German foreign and security policy of the red-green coalition in 1998-2005.
- 8. German foreign and security policy in the view of the opposition in 1998-2005.
- 9. Deployment of the Bundeswehr in military operations in the framework of crisis management.
- 10. Reform of the Bundeswehr - the course, international political aspects, military aspects, and the context.
- 11. Perspectives of the foreign and security policy of Germany.
- 12. Presentation of remaining presentations and general consultation.

- Assessment methods
- Compulsory-elective course - B, completed by credit. The course is completed by a written test. To pass the course, it is necessary to submit a presentation on a chosen topic, to elaborate a “position paper” on the given topics and to pass a credit written test with the success rate of 60 % points.
Teaching methods: lectures, discussions at the seminar, elaboration of position papers, reading literature, elaboration and presentation of presentations. - Language of instruction
