Course objectives
Lectures and seminars will provide students with a basic overview of the issues of current radio broadcasting in the world (especially in the USA, Great Britain, Germany, France Poland, and Slovakia). The course consists of lectures and seminars and has a summarising character combining historical, theoretical and practical views.
Syllabus
  • 1. Defining the basic terms: simple and dual system of radio broadcasting, public service broadcasting, commercial radio broadcasting, and institutions regulating radio broadcasting. 2. Formats of radio channels in the world, their history and changes, journalistic genres in contemporary radio broadcasting and their changes. 3. Radio broadcasting in the USA, commercialisation of American broadcasting in 1920–1934, regulation of radio broadcasting in the USA, and contemporary radio broadcasting in the USA. 4. Public broadcasting in the USA, history of public broadcasting in the USA, National Public Radio (NPR), financing the NPR and its programme structure, and the present and future of radio broadcasting in the USA. 5. Beginnings of radio broadcasting in Great Britain, the Broadcasting Act in Great Britain, and activities and role of the BBC; 6. BBC's present, its programme structure and production guidelines. 7. Radio news reporting and current affairs programmes on BBC channels (with an emphasis on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Five Live), trends applied in BBC's radio journalism. 8. Radio broadcasting in Germany, France, Poland, and Slovakia (with an emphasis on news channels, e.g. France Info, Rádio Zet, etc.). 9. The role of the presenter in news radio channels, samples of work of individual presenters and their analysis, and basic rules of presenting a programme on music radio channels. 10. The influence of digitisation of television and radio broadcasting on the contemporary radio journalism in the world, changes of radio genres, and convergence of television and radio journalism. 11. Final discussion about selected issues and problems of contemporary radio broadcasting with an emphasis on radio news programmes in the world.

Lecture and seminar. Credit: conditions for awarding the credit: active participation in lectures and seminars and submitting a seminar paper on a selected topic associated with the issues of current radio broadcasting in the world.
