Course objectives
The goal of the course is to give the students an elementary basis of facts in the field of the history of international relations between the years 1648 – 1914, teach the students how to understand and explain the developments in international relations and offer the students the necessary know-how on how to utilize the obtained information in the analysis of current political processes.

  • 1. Peace of Westphalia – prologue to a new phase in international politics in Europe. 2. International relations and the politics of Great powers in Europe in the 2nd half of the 17th century. 3. International relations and the politics of Great powers in Europe in the 1st half of the 18th century. 4. The competition of Great powers in Europe 1740-1790. 5. Napoleonic wars. 6. Congress of Vienna. 7. Concert of Europe 1815-1854 8. End of the Concert of Europe. 9. The Eastern question. 10. The colonial expansion of European centers. 11. The formation of the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente. 12. The Russian-Japanese war, first and second Balkan war. 13. International relations on the eve of the First World War.

Assessment methods
Teaching methods: reading, consultations, elaborating paper, writen test in the half of the semester. A written test in the half of the semester is one of the graded course tasks. A formal essay is required in order to successfully complete the course. After the fulfillment of these requirements the grade will be determined based on the final written exam (a minimum of 60% of points is necessary).
