Cíle předmětu

The main goal of this course is to introduce many of the major schools of thought and topics of research in the field of Sociology. We take an historical view of the development of social theory from the 19th century until today. Students will learn about the many developments in social thought, in particular sociological theory, during this time by reading textbooks as well as primary source materials. C. Wright Mills’ classic book, The Sociological Imagination, will provide one frame for looking at the development of sociological theory and praxis up to recent years.

Výukové metody

The teaching methods used in this course involve weekly lectures and the reading of literature. The semester grade is determined only by your performance on the two exams.

Metody hodnocení

Students are expected to read the assigned literature before class and to attend every lecture. Each student's final evaluation (A-F) for the semester is based on the following components:

40% – Mid-term exam
60% – Final exam
There is no opportunity to affect your semester grade other than the two exams.

Dr. Benjamin Vail is Assistant Professor in the Sociology Department. His office is located in room 359 in the FSS building, and his consultation hours will be posted at the start of each semester.
