Course objectives
Students will master the issue of criminal policy by means of international comparison, the basic models of criminal law and criminal policy, they will learn to find their way through the basic penal systems in the world, use methods of comparative analysis when studying systems of criminal law and criminal policy.

  • 1. Introduction to comparative study of criminal policy; 2. Course definition, basic terminology, relation to other fields; 3. Methods of comparative analysis of criminal law and criminal policy; 4. Development, sources, difficulties and goals of comparative analysis of criminal policy; 5. Classification of models (systems) of criminal law and policy; 6. Characteristics of penal systems in chosen countries; 7. Accusative and inquisitorial system of criminal procedures; 8. Assessment methods
The course is completed by an exam which consists of two parts – a seminar paper and a written test. Students will be assessed as follows: 1/3 seminar paper and its presentation, 2/3 comprehensive written test. 1. A seminar paper on a theme chosen from a list or approved by the teacher in the course of the term will be handed in no later than May 15th. The paper will span 10 to 15 pages. The paper must be submitted in an electronic form both to the hand-in system in the IS and to the teacher’s email address. Papers submitted after the deadline will not be considered. The paper is assessed in terms of invention, student’s ability to find relevant issues within the theme, its logical structure, and whether or not quotes and comments comply with the norms. It is also necessary to use a broader spectre of sources than just the listed literature. The seminar paper must be presented at a seminar. 2. Comprehensive written exam (covers matter read at lectures and included in listed literature, questions come in the form of a test with four possible answers of which none need to be correct, or any number can be correct). Evaluation: 56-60 points: A, 51-55 points: B, 46-50 points: C, 41-45 points: D, 36-40 points: E, 35 and less: F.
