You should have a CEF (Common European Framework) C1 level of English language competence to pass this exam or obtain recognition.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The AIM of this course is to test that the student has at least a CEF C1 level of English in ACADEMIC WRITING.
Syllabus
  • This is an EXAM COURSE ONLY where the student writes an essay on the dissertation topic or can obtain recognition based on previous work (see RECOGNITION REQUIREMENTS below in the last section). There is NO participation component.

Teaching methods
There are self-study materials, a bibliography and instructions for the student to consult.
Assessment methods
An essay on the student's dissertation topic is evaluated using the criteria of the Writing Section of the CEF at the C1 level.

ESSAY PARAMETERS (written exam):
(1) length of about 4 standard pages (i.e. 7200 characters or about 1200 to 1500 words)
(2) formal style corresponding to academic writing (title, introduction, main body, conclusion)
(3) use of academic conventions when citing sources
STYLE AND ORGANIZATION:
(1) clear argumentation expressed in paragraphs
(2) paragraphs are logically and coherently sequenced
(3) use of text construction principles
(4) formal register
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
(1) wide grammatical range suitable for academic writing (appropriate tenses, modal verbs)
(2) precise grammatical structures
(3) ability to form compound and complex sentences (not only simple sentences)
VOCABULARY:
(1) relevant vocabulary and technical terminology
(2) precise use of expressions, idioms, and phrases suitable for academic writing
(3) conjunctions and joining phrases appropriate to formal writing
SOURCES: the student may bring to the exam some written out citations, a list of literature used, and technical and general dictionaries (all of which can be checked by the examiner). Citations should not compose more than 10% of the overall essay.
