- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce students to the qualitative approach in psychological research. The course will be focused on the method of thematic analysis, which can be considered to be the most basic approach in qualitative research. Emphasis will be put on the acquisition of practical skills in qualitative analysis.
- Learning outcomes
- After successful completion of the course, student should be able to:
- explain and apply the qualitative mode of inquiry in psychological research
- formulate a research question and develop a semi-structured interview protocal
- perform a basic analysis of data in a form of text
- formulate and present resultant themes - Syllabus
- (1) Introduction into qualitative research, main approaches, thematic analysis in particular. Formation of a research question and its role in the research project. Formulation of a joint research question, formulation of partial research questions and the development of a semi-structured interview protocol.
- (2) Sampling and data creation. Conducting a research interview. Data transcription. Informed consent. Feedback to a conducted research interview.
- (3) Coding methods in thematic analysis. The choice of an epistemological perspective and its consequences for the analysis. Feedback to students' coding.
- (4) The creation and formulation of themes, writing a research report. Working with literature in qualitative research. Enhancing validity through researchers' consensus and participants' feedback. Variations of themnatic analysis.

- To successfully complete this course, student have to attend to at least 75% of the seminars, hand in all assignments, as well as the final semester paper, and succeed in a written exam.
