Course objectives
The aim of the course is to offer students a basic orientation in the history of nature conservation and environmental movements from the modern period to the present, both in the world and in the Czech Republic. The lectures will provide students with background ideas and also institutional protection of nature, but in a wider relationship with the environment, with contexts of philosophical, political, religious or economic concepts. The lectures will also offer orientation in the environmental movement, both at the level of the individual and in the form of persons, movements and organizations.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to summarize, identify and analyze important movements, events, personalities in the history of nature conservation and environmental movements; analyze current trends in terms of their relevance to past developments; to compare the individual ideological starting points and the institutional protection of nature conservation.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introductory lesson; basic theses and concepts. 2. Relation to nature (and the environment) and its "protection" in history until the early modern age in Europe and non-European civilizations. Mechanistic x vitalist approach 3. Preromantic and romantic relationship to nature and the first action to protect it; A. von Humboldt. 4. The onset of the scientific foundation of nature conservation; 19th century and the protection of nature, especially forest terrain; first wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. 5. The emergence of protected areas and the first nature conservation societies in the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century in Europe. 6. Origin of protected areas and first nature protection societies of the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century in the USA. 7. Relationship toward nature in the Third Reich and the Communist countries of the 1950s. 8. 1960s - Rachel Carson, Silent Spring, and Environmental. movement 9. the 1970s and 1980s in Europe and the world. 8. The 1990s (Congress in Rio 1992) and the first decade(s) of the 21st century. 10. Far East's relationship to nature and its protection. 11. India: Gandhi´s legacy and the environmentalism of the poor. 12. A reflexion of climatic change 13. Current situation and relationship to previous developments, Summary, discussion.
