Course objectives
To introduce students to the basic concepts of social stratification. The course is divided into three blocks. In the first block, students are introduced to the basic concepts used in social stratification research. The second block focuses on the basic sources of social inequalities - the family, the school, gender and the state. The third block introduces some of the implications of social stratification on human life.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- identify the basic sources of social inequalities
- reflect on the consequences of social inequalities in ordinary life
- apply concepts from the field of social stratification

  • 2. Classics of social stratification (Marx, Weber, Bourdieu)
  • 3. Class division of society (EGP, ESeC)
  • 4. Intergenerational reproduction of inequalities
  • 5. Educational inequalities
  • 6. The state as a source of inequality
  • 7. Reading Week
  • 8. Intersectionality, inequalities by gender and ethnicity
  • 9. Structural shifts in society (industrialisation, post-industrialisation, technological change, Industry 4.0)
