Cíle předmětu
The course will overview the history of agriculture and rural society from the socialist era to contemporary processes. We will discuss this topic from a Central European perspective, focusing on case studies from Hungarian rural history and to a lesser extent adjacent countries (Romania, Slovenia). Students will learn about the role of ideologies and policies of the socialist and post-socialist eras and the effect of politics on rural societies. The course will also discuss various theories in connection with the landscape and the basic paradigms developed by social sciences to interpret the complex reality of rural areas in the socialist era and the post-socialist change of the countryside. Besides basic theoretical questions, it demonstrates several examples (Hungarian, Central-European) of landscape change and their effects on communities. In the second half of the course, they will also learn about contemporary processes in rural areas, including the changing agri-food sector and the consumption turn of rural society and its effects on the landscape. We will also discuss the dilemmas of integrated rural development and the possible role of social sciences in this field of expertise. In connection with contemporary issues, students will also learn about various development methods, from modernist, top-down approaches to participatory practices, the concept of new governance, and integrated rural development based on local knowledge and resources. They will also learn about the New Rural Paradigm and the policies it has produced. A special emphasis is put on the agri-food and biotechnology sectors' role in development policies. Besides showing students „good” and „bad” practices in development, the course also introduces them to the social scientific study of development practices.
