Course objectives
The aim of the course is, under the supervision of supervisors, to carry out independent research in a specific thematic area of the relevant field and to present its results in the form of a professional text, in the scope and formal standards (text structure, annotation, keywords, format, citation method, list of sources and literature used) defined by the field. Graduates of the course are able to formulate a research problem relevant to their field, conduct relevant research of their own and, on the basis of the data collected or analysed, produce a professional text that complies with the theoretical, methodological and formal requirements of the field. Learners are also prepared to defend their text competently. In addition to the conditions agreed upon with the supervisors, the submission of the thesis topic and assignment and its acceptance by the department chair in its final form is a condition for the award of credit. The course ENSn4526 is a prerequisite for ENSN4528.ENSn4528 is compulsory in the semester in which the student intends to submit the thesis (usually the 4th semester of study in the ENS Master's programme).
Learning outcomes
Student of this course:
- will be able to formulate a relevant research problem in the field of environmental studies and related research questions - can prepare a research study on the selected problem and formulate a selection algorithm defining which resources are relevant to the chosen problem
- will be able to create a research design corresponding to the chosen research question and problem, in order to match the research and reflect the existing knowledge of the field

Teaching methods
The student participates in individual consultations with the supervisor in all stages of thesis preparation, writing, and completion.
Assessment methods
This course takes the form of individual consultations of students’ theses with their supervisors. It concludes with a credit granted by the supervisor upon the condition that the student submits their final thesis in time. The thesis needs to meet the terms set in the assignment and comply with formal requirements and standards in the respective field of research.
