- Cíle předmětu
- The course deals with the Sub-Saharan macro region of the African continent (SSA), its countries, peoples and political systems, as well as African issues in a complex and holistic way, which all will be discussed in a critical manner using IR theories and methods, including Geopolitics. While discussing such issues about SSA, the changing world order will also be better revealed, within which the opportunities and challenges countries of SSA face, will be understood. The course falls under the interdisciplinary framework of African Studies. The case studies presented by the lecturer are based on his multi-year field research projects in several countries of SSA.
- Výstupy z učení
- Students will develop analytical skills in connection with Africa-related issues. They will acquire knowledge about the complexity of Africa in the international system in general, and its multi-faceted political, societal, economic and cultural landscape in particular, with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. They will refine presentation skills and develop persuasive speech techniques. They will also broaden their horizon with regard to the international system.

The African state in a historic context Topic 2: The developmental state and developmental patrimonialism in Sub-Saharan Africa April 23 (Wednesday) Topic 3: Post-conflict Rwanda: Development and geopolitics 30 years after the genocide Topic 4: Ethiopia today April 24 (Thursday) Topic 5: Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in SSA: The case of the East African Community (EAC) and Tanzania Topic 6: Agenda 2063 and the African Union (AU): the question of security April 25 (Friday) Topic 7: Afro-Asian relations with a focus on China in Africa Topic 8: Global African migrations, the African diaspora
- Metody hodnocení
- Students can earn their grade when - they actively attend the classes: 15% - they submit a home essay of 6 pages + bibliography about any of these topics: (1) The Rwandan genocide in film; (2) The developmental state in Ethiopia; (3) Post-apartheid South Africa: 35%. Deadline of submission: to be discussed. If you miss this deadline, you can get only 15%! - they accomplish an online final test: 50%.
