Course objectives
The course introduces students to main theoretical approaches in personality psychology. In agreement with the history of personality psychology, students are led to understand the differences between the so-called static and dynamic, horizontal and vertical, trait, situational and interactional concept of personality. Theory is accompanied with practical applications; it is emphasized that it is not possible to work practically with people (i.e. do psychological assessment, psychotherapy or make educational interventions) if we are not able to distinguish or identify components and units that personality is composed of. Students are gradually acquainted with the key notions of each concept, its sources and possible use in practice. The aim is to teach students make critical evaluations of the status of theoreticality of each view of personality under examination so that they realize that what sometimes appears as a theory tends to be only a model or an idea of personality. Students are guided to be able to choose “their own” view that will match their personal disposition and to get acquainted with this view by studying resources and thus make conditions for integrating understanding of personality and for research or reflected professional activities.

  • Classes are held in six thematic blocks, always 4 lessons once every two weeks. 1. Theory of personality - current issues, perspectives of integration of knowledge on personality. History of personality studies - naive and pseudoscientific approaches of personality psychology, origins of personality psychology, origins of empirical research in personality psychology, constitutional personality psychology and typological theories. Current approaches to the study of personality. 2. Trait approach in the theory of personality. Personological conception of personality: W. Stern. L. Klages and his characterology. Practical personality psychology: F. Baumgarten. Dispositional theory of personality: G.W. Allport. Trait theory: J. Guilford, R.B. Cattell, H.J. Eysenck. Psycholexical approach to personality: Big five factors. 3. Cognitive approach to personality. Personal construct theory: G. Kelly. Field theory and a holistic approach to personality: K. Lewin. Assessment methods
The course consists of lectures and seminars. In seminars, students apply acquired knowledge on particular theoretical approaches in personality psychology when analysing selected case studies. During the term, students write a seminar work on an assigned topic. There is a written exam at the end of the course.
