Course objectives
Quantitative content analysis (CA) is currently one of the fastest growing techniques in media and communication research. The aim of this course is to offer a basic theoretical overview of this technique, its design, logic and possibilities for application, and to teach students the practical procedures and rules for coding, analysis and interpretation of data. Specific attention will be devoted to the issues of sampling, validity and reliability (with the practical introduction into inter-coder reliability measures). Within the course, students will be preparing their own project of empirical research using CA.
Syllabus
  • 1st consultation: introduction into the course; what is and what is not a quantitative content analysis (basic principles of the method and possibilities for its practical use); designing CA
  • 2nd consultation: units in CA; construction of the coding book; sampling techniques for CA; issues of validity and reliablity
  • 3rd consultation: analysis and interpretation of data in CA; discussion of students' projects
