Course objectives
At the end of the course students wil be able to discuss and analyze typical examples of clients (both children and youth) in CC. The course will be consisted of lectures from chosen topics on psychologist work in the Center for children and adolescents in need, casuistics workshops where students will actively participate in analysis of typical both child and adolescent clients, as well as the one day excursion in the Center for children and adolescents in need, Hapalova 4, Brno.
Syllabus
  • Lecture 1:
  • Center for children and adolescents in need
  • Specifics of psychologist work in condition of multidisciplinary team.
  • Workshop 1:
  • Initiative interview with client (child, parent, family)
  • Workshop 2:
  • Case studies, examples of the opening interviews with clients of the Centre.
  • Lecture 2:
  • Psychological diagnostics, counselling and psychotherapeutic contract in the Centre for children and adolescents in need.
  • Psychodynamic and psychoanalytic tpsychoherapy with children and adolescents in conditions of the Centre.
  • Workshop 3:
  • Reports by students
  • Psychodiagnostic methods used in the Centre.
  • Case studies: examples of drawings, plays and scene-test scenario, results of tests and questionnaire.
  • Workshop 4:
  • Play as a psychodiagnostic and psychotherapeutic method in psychological work with children.
  • Lecture 3:
  • Child abuse and neglect syndrome (CAN syndrome).
  • Workshop 5:
  • Reports by students
  • Case studies: sexual abused child (psychodiagnosis, long-term psychodynamic therapy).

  • Worshop 6:
  • Case study of a maltreated child (psychodiagnostics, psychotherapy, state institutions procedure after report of the case).
  • Case study of a neglected child (psychodiagnostics, psychotherapy, state institutions procedure in taking the chikldren away from the family).

  • Lecture 4:
  • Trauma of divorce and custody conflicts. How children cope with the divorce of their parents?
  • Workshop 7:
  • Reports by students.
  • Case study: assisted meeting of a parent with his/her child.
  • Workshop 8:
  • Case studies: divorce from children perspective.
  • Lecture 5:
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder in childhood and adolescency: psychodiagnostics and psychotherapy.
  • Child as a victim or a witness of a criminal act, natural disaster,or accident.
  • Workshop 9:
  • Reports by students
  • Case study: adolescent as victim of criminal act (longitudinal psychoanalytical psychotherapy).
  • Workshop 10:
  • Case studies: traumatic loss of a near person (crisis intervention).
  • Lecture 6:
  • Children and adolescent on a „crisis bed“ of the Centre for children and adolescents in need.
  • Workshop 11:
  • Reports by students.
  • Case study: „I don't want to be at home, because I am not getting along with my parents“ (problematics of personality and behaviour disorders)
  • Workshop 12:
  • Topic to be chosen by students.

Assessment methods
Requirements for passing the course:
- 80% attend at workshops and lectures
-active participation at class
-oral or written presenation of report (extent of max. 10 minutes or min. 2 pages) on a book or article from area of child psychology, psychotherapy, psychology of trauma, or victimology.
-oral exam in form of discussion on read book from the list of literature.
