Course objectives
The aim of the course is to give students the basic rules, training and experience to make semi-formal and formal presentations in order to be able to present their research at academic conferences and workshops and/or in their future jobs. Moreover, they will be able to acquire the experience at being an audience, e.g. by focusing on note-taking, asking for clarifications, and offering appropriate questions and comments. Together with written assignments, related or unrelated to their presentation, they will be able to practice all four academic skills, i.e. speaking, writing, listening and reading.
Course objectives:
1. Students will be acquainted with the process of making and delivering a successful presentation.
2. Practising the acquired skills in front of an audience, which will contribute to building students’ confidence.
3. Extending academic vocabulary.
4. Students will learn how to write an abstract and improve their writing skills.
5. Discussions on various academic and non-academic topics.
Syllabus
  • Syllabus:
  • 1. Introduction to the course. Academic orientation. Short presentation- introducing your partner.
  • 2. Register, formal x informal presentation, purpose of presentation, needs analysis. Signposting.
  • 3. Overview of the process of developing a presentation. Reading: skimming and scanning. Writing: Paragraph building. Short presentation: introducing your field.
  • 4. Presentation Structure: title, introduction, main body, conclusion (concluding a presentation). Writing: Paraphrasing. Nominalisation. The passive.
  • 5. Types of presentations (persuasive, informative, personal, etc.). Speaking: Agreeing and disagreeing.
  • 6. Analysis of speakers and speaking styles. Writing: Summarising, writing an abstract. Short persuasive presentation (in pairs).
  • 7. Using visuals (e.g. PowerPoint, Prezi) effectively. Language for focusing on visuals.
  • 8. Asking and answering questions – discussion. Giving positive and negative feedback. Writing: argumentative essay/position paper. Drafting and building arguments.
  • 9. Non-verbal communication, body language.
  • 10. Final revision.
