Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce main frameworks and theoretical approaches towards crime (deviance) and criminal justice with emphasis on the sociological theories. These approaches will be introduced based on key readings in criminology. After the course completion, students should be able to describe different theories explaining crime and its control, its historical development as well as latest findings in criminology. Further, they should be able to critically evaluate contemporary criminal justice and how it can be influenced by the theoretical approaches.

Teaching methods
Lectures, seminar, position papers.
Assessment methods
For the course completion, two position papers (7 200 - 9 000 characters) and a written exam are required. Students can obtain two points for each of the papers. The lecturer may return the paper for rework if it does not comply with the requested number of characters or quality standard. In this case, the maximum number of points for the returned paper decreases to one point.
