There are no formally enforced prerequisites, but some exposure (e.g. in an introductory BA-level course) to methods of formal demography, research design, and some experience with quantitative data analysis are a significant benefit that will make your course participation more efficient. Reasonable ability to write and speak in English is anticipated.

Cíle předmětu
This course covers selected major topics from the area of population studies (broadly defined) including traditional topics of demography such as fertility, mortality, and migration as well as selected areas of social demography such as population health, ageing, intergenerational relations, marriage, divorce, and inequality. The course will focus on current developments as they relate to Europe and other industrialized democratic societies.
Výstupy z učení
Students will be able: 1. to understand basic demographic processes and events; 2. to understand relevant approaches of formal demography and to calculate basic demographic indicators; 3. to find (and download) relevant demographic data from worldwide databases; 4. to analyze such data; 5. to understand current demographic development and its relation to historical one; 6. to write an article on a topic concerning population studies.
