- Cíle předmětu
- This seminar is associated with SOC 756, Research Methodology. It will provide students with an opportunity to delve more deeply and profoundly the issues addressed within SOC756 course. The overarching goal is to offer students a comprehensive understanding of the diverse issues on research methodologies in the social sciences.
- Výstupy z učení
- By the end of the semester, students should be able to: •Recognize, define and discuss various methods for research in the social sciences •Review and assess existing research according to its methodology and use of data and methods •Compare and contrast quantitative and qualitative research methods •Formulate research problems and apply techniques for collecting data and presenting and interpreting findings that address the relevant research questions •Cultivate research proficiency and expertise by undertaking semester-long assignments that involves designing research projects, collecting data and presenting the results.

- The following assignments are to be fulfilled during the whole semester: 1) Research methods short essay (individual assignment): This assignment will help you to demonstrate basic knowledge of sociological methods. 2) In-Depth interviewing - running 2 interviews and reporting 3) Design and pilot a questionnaire that is placed in the context of an appropriate research question, hypothesis and sampling strategy. THIS IS A TEAM ASSIGNMENT – 2 students per team. You will write a reflection paper on the limitation of the questionnaire, method, sample, analysis (if any) and suggest some changes that would be required. 4) An analysis/review of the role that issues of measurement and analysis play in social sciences (individual assignment).

- Výukové metody
- The dates of seminars are to be announced as they depend on the assignments needed to be fulfilled. Students are required to actively participate in these seminars as we will discuss the development of the assignments and they are required to present some of them after completion. Stu-dents are expected to work on the assignments, cooperate with colleagues, and discuss the issues when needed during planned meetings. This is a seminar, no lectures to be offered.
