Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce to the topic of autism spectrum disorders, especially to: - special characteristics of children with ASD - basic etiological theories - various ASD interventions and approaches Students are encouraged and led to get a basic understanding of experience, thinking, and behavior of people with ASD and to critical evaluation of commonly used practices in assessment, counseling, and therapy.
Learning outcomes
students should be able: - to recognize children at risk for autism spectrum disorder - to identify symptoms specific for the autism spectrum disorders - to critically evaluate research papers relevant to the topic - to avoid common mistakes that are made when children with ASD are assessed - to critically evaluate ASD intervention and approaches and to chose those practices that are most suitable for a concrete child and his/her family system - to provide parents and teachers basic counseling
Syllabus
  • Observation, symptoms, and assessment - diagnostically significant symptoms, other common symptoms, ASD red flags in infancy and toddlerhood
  • ASD etiology and its theoretical framework
  • Interventions and a lifelong perspective - basic types of ASD therapeutic approaches, therapy, and counseling options; biographies of people on the spectrum
  • Family of a child with ASD, developmental psychology perspective on ASD

Teaching methods
lectures, class discussions, case studies, individual presentations, and group projects
Assessment methods
To complete the course, students have to:
- actively participate in class discussions
- create a presentation based on their own review of research findings on one of the areas of possible etiological factors (e.g. genetics; teratogens); the presentation should be based on at least 2 empirical studies or meta-analysis
- participate in a group project - a presentation of a biography of a chosen person on the spectrum
- pass the oral exam
