Course objectives
• Identification of minorities as subjects of international protection + analysis of the defining characteristics of minorities.
• Distinguishing minorities from other groups with similar characteristics (eg. migrants, refugees)
• Familiarization with the relevant international instruments for the protection of minorities (Art. 27 ICCPR, Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities)
• Discussion of modern challenges regarding minority protection.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the students will be able to:
(a) Identify minorities as subjects of international protection
(b) Distinguish minorities from other groups with similar characteristics (eg. migrants, refugees)
(c) Become familiar with the relevant international instruments for the protection of minorities
(d) Discuss modern challenges regarding minority protection.
