Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to: understand to the Law and Humanities approach; to explain and critically analyse political and artistic speeches dealing with legal issues; formulate own interpretation of emphasized issues both in spoken and written form. The aim of this subject is to improve stylistic, analytic and communication skills of students in order to strengthen their ability to use rhetoric to higher level.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the course; Antic culture: Aischylos, Sofokles, Euripides; Antic rhetoric: Aristoteles; question of justice 2. Medieval culture: St. Augustin and Evil, theatre moralities, question of Good and Evil in law 3. Renaissance culture: Shakespeare, Marlowe, Machiavelli; defence in trials of Elizabethan era; question of Power in law 4. 18. – 1914: romanticism, realism a naturalism: Mácha, Čechov, Ibsen, Balzac, Zola; theatre avant-garde a social critic; speeches of TGM; question of critic in society 5. WWI: famous politic speeches, dramas about WWI; question of individual responsibility and law 6. 1918 – 1945: political culture between WWI and WWII; avant-garde: Werich a Voskovec, Čapkové; question of morality and law 20th century 7. WWII: famous politic speeches, dramas about WWII; question of individual bravery 8. 50s: communism vs. pop-culture in a politically- polarized world: SORELA, Williams, O´Neill, Miller; question of “witch-hunts” 9. 60s: the Prague Spring and the Czechoslovak New Vawe; Kohout, Havel, Uhde, Topol; question of “normalisation” 10. 1989: the Velvet revolution and its pictures in art; question of revenge and law 11. 2000- : current political culture in politic speeches and art; Kabaret Havel, Odcházení, Blonďatá bestie; question of corruption and law 12. The end of the course; evaluation.
