Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to introduce students to the practical aspects of basic and special methods of assisted reproduction. In the course of the exercises, students will learn micromanipulation of gametes and embryos, laboratory methods performed in the course of obtaining gametes, their evaluation and preparation for fertilization. Much attention will be paid to practical training in fertilization methods, embryo quality assessment, cryopreservation of gametes and embryos, and sample collection for genetic testing. Practical skills training will be a key element of the course.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
- master the procedures of obtaining gametes and their preparation for fertilization.
- In addition, the student will gain experience in performing micromanipulation techniques including methods of fertilizing oocytes using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and collecting a sample for genetic testing.
- Able to independently assess gamete quality and gain an understanding of how to evaluate embryo development.
- Know how to prepare an embryo for transfer and know the basic procedures for cryopreservation of gametes and embryos.
- be able to adjust a microscope and micromanipulator.
Syllabus
  • - Culture methods and preparation of culture medium (incubators, plastic aids, composition of culture media), control of culture medium, work with medical gases
  • - Training in working with the microscope and micromanipulator, micromanipulation of gametes and embryos Basic AR methods:
  • - Processing of ejaculate, preparation of spermatozoa for in vitro fertilization, determination and evaluation of spermiogram
  • - Searching and evaluation of oocyte-cumulus complexes, oocyte denudation, evaluation of oocyte maturity and quality
  • - Conventional in vitro fertilization
  • - Fertilization by intracytoplasmic sperm injection ICSI
  • - Laboratory record keeping

Teaching methods
100% participation in the exercises is required. Completion is by practical examination and credit.
Assessment methods
The main element of the course will be practical teaching in the teaching laboratory supplemented by an excursion to the clinical embryology laboratory, during the practical teaching mouse oocytes, embryos, and reproductive organs (or biological material from other species) will be used.
