- Prerequisites
- VLLM0421c Med.Microbiol. && VLBC0422p Biochemistry II - lecture
Students are supposed to understand topics of first term (subject VLLM0421p). - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- General Medicine (programme LF, M-VL) (2)
- Course objectives
- The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with the basics of diagnostic and therapeutic approach in the most typical microbial diseases. This basic knowledge will then be broadened in clinical subjects (especially Infectology). Those interested in deeper knowledge in antibiotic problematic and clinical microbiology may later register to the subject VSAT081 (Basics of antimicrobial therapy)
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course student
* defines microbial findings in different localisations
* defines the difference between common microbial flora, temporary findings, contaminants and pathogens in various localisations
* records infections that are rare and the rather common ones
* defines basics of diagnostic and therapeutic approach in the most typical microbial disease; here, basis is only supposed, more enlargement is supposed in other subjects, namely Infectology
Namely student defines normal flora (if it does exist)/transitory findings/contaminants/pathogens in
* individual parts of upper and lower respiratory ways, lungs and middle ear
* different parts of gastroitestinal tract, livers, bile bladder and pancreas
* individual parts of uropoetic system
* individual parts of reproductive system
* individual parts of central and peripherial neural system
* bloodstream, bones, muscles and different tissuess
* skin, eyes, extarnal ear
Student also describes specific problems of microbial infections
* during pregnancy and delivery and during first days after delivery
* in hospitalized, especially immunocompromised persons (healthcare associated infections)
Student also composes the basic facts in in
* problematics of biofilm detection (including testing of effectivity of antibiotics to biofilm)
* basic processi of clinical microbiology (indication, sampling, material transport, specimen processing, result releasing, result interpretation) - Syllabus

The subject is finished by the exam that has three parts. A student that is not successful at any of the parts does not continue to other parts. The exception is a student coming to his/her last resit. Such student always absolves all three parts, and a co-examiner is present at the third part.
(1) Written admission test consists of 20 questions, mostly "single best answer" type, partially also filling in missing word or other type questions. Students having at least 14 correct answers are considered having successfully done this part. Students coming to a resit term and having the test successfully completed in one of previous attempts do not have to redo the test again.
(2) Practical examination means doing a task picked by a student, or given to him by a teacher. Students coming for a resit term do not have to absolve the practical part repeatedly if they have got value "A" or "B" at one of previous attempts. Elaborating of a written protocol from the practical part may be requested.
(3) Theoretical part means that student picks one question for each of three groups of questions. The total number of questions is approximately 180. The student elaborates the questions in written form, signs them and gives them to the teacher. The teacher asks additional questions to them orally. After that, the student is evaluated.
Warning 1: At any part of the exam the student may be told to show his/her protocols from practical sessions. The quality of the protocols may be taken into account at the final evaluation.
Warning 2: Skipping the test and/or the practical part cannot be done in case of students coming again for their regular exam term in a repeatedly registered subject.
Note: Student that failed at part (1) and (2) and feel disadvantaged may appeal to the head-examiner during next 60 minutes. - Language of instruction

Students are supposed to understand topics of first term (subject VLLM0421p). - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- General Medicine (programme LF, M-VL)
* skin, eyes, extarnal ear

- Course objectives
- At the end of this course, student
* defines importance of individual bacterial findings in different clinical materials
* analyzes the difference between common microbial flora, transient findings, contamination and pathogens in different localisations
* judges what infections are rather rare and what infections use to be common
* describes basic approaches of diagnostics and treatment of the most typical microbial diseases; nevertheless, here only basis can be given, and more detailed knowledge should be given in clinical subjects, especially Infectology
Namely, student is able to define common microflora (if present)/transient findings/common contaminants/pathogens of
* different parts of upper and lower respiratory ways, lungs and middle ear
* different parts of gastrointestinal tract, liver, bile bladder and pancreas
* different parts of urinary tract
* different parts of genital system
* different parts of central and peripherial nervous system
* bloodstream, bones, muscles and various tissues
* skin, eyes, external ear
Student also will know specific problems of microbial infections
* during pregnancy, during birth and in first days after bith
* of in-patients, especially immunocompromised (hospital infections) - Syllabus

The subject is finished by the exam that has three parts. A student that is not successful at any of the parts does not continue to other parts. The exception is a student coming to his/her last resit. Such student always absolves all three parts, and a co-examiner is present at the third part.
(1)Written admission test consists of 20 questions, mostly "single best answer" type, partially also filling in missing word or other type questions.

Subject is finished by written admission test, practical examination and oral theoretical examination.
Admission test consists of 20 questions, mostly "single best answer" type, partially also filling in missing word or other type questions. Students having at least 14 correct answers continue to the practical part. Practical examination means doing a task picked by a student, or given him by a teacher. Students coming for resit terms do not have to complete the test again if they have it completed succesfully in the previous attempt. They also do not have to absolve repeatedly the practical part if they have got value "A" or "B" at the previous attempt. This is not valid for students coming again for regular exam session in a repeatedly registered subject.
In theoretical part, student picks one triplet of theoretic questions. There are about 150 questions (may be changed).
In case of failure at any part of the examination the student fails at the attempt. This is not valid for 2nd resit terms (and 1st resit terms in repeated subject for students who study according to novelized Study regulation) - in this case students continue to the oral part of the examination not regarding the result of the admission test and the practical part. - Language of instruction

* skin, eyes, external ear
Student also will know specific problems of microbial infections
* during pregnancy, during birth and in first days after bith
* of in-patients, especially immunocompromised (hospital infections) - Syllabus

- Assessment methods
- Attendance at lectures is not checked, but is recommended.

- Assessment methods
- Attendance at lectures is not checked, but is recommended.
Subject is finished by practical examination, written admission test and oral theoretical examination. In case of failure at any part of the examination the student fails at the attempt.
Practical examination means doing a task picked by a student, or given him by a teacher. Student not succesfull at the practical examination does not continue to the theoretical examination. If student comes for 2nd/3rd attempt, and in one of previous attempt he got "A" or "B" from practical, he/she goes directly to theoretical part. This is not valid for students coming again for regular exam session in a repeatedly registered subject.
In theoretical part, student has to subdue written admission test (approx. 20 to 30 questions). After sucesfull absolution, student picks one triplet of theoretic questions. There are about 150 questions (may be changed). In case of succesfull test and not sucessfull oral examination, at a next attempt (in frame of one registration of the subject) the written test is not performed again. - Language of instruction
