Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able: understand and explain biophysical principles and laws; master biophysical principles of the main devices; evaluate obtained data by the basic biophysical methods in light of a scientific, effective, safe and efficient attitude to their use; understand principles of the more complex therapeutical and diagnostical medical devices; discriminate possible usage of the biophysical techniques and medical devices in practice;Besides the deeper understanding of principles of medical devices, the interactions „healthcare professional-device“ and „patient-device“ are underlined and the resulting risks explained more in detail. Interpretation of the quality and performance indicators is a new feature in these lectures.
Syllabus
  • Principles and practice of radiation protection: 1) Physical principles of radiation protection 2) Dosimetry and detectors of radiation 3) Safety of patients 4) Dose optimisation – relation between the dose and image quality in radiology 5) Principles and criteria of radiation protection ;
  • Healthcare devices and their importance for diagnostics and therapy Diagnostic methods and devices: 1) Biosignals and their diagnostic importance 2) Selected measuring and recording methods and instruments 3) Selected imaging methods and devices ;
  • Therapeutic methods and devices: 1) Devices for physical therapy and rehabilitation – methods using mechanical energy – electrotherapeutical methods – magnetotherapeutical methods, thermotherapy, phototherapy. Principles of radiotherapy (X-ray devices, radionuclide sources, particle accelerators)2) Devices for surgery 3) Surgical theatres and intensive care units. 4) Devices for substitution and assist of body organs 5) Sterilisation apparatuses and other auxiliary devices
