- Course objectives
- This course is focused on understanding basic information about etiology, pathogenesis and morphology of the most common diseases. In the general part, the student will get to know main groups of pathologic conditions of the human body (inflammation, circulation disorders, tumors etc.). In the special part, diseases of particular organs and organ systems are presented, as well as their consequences and complications. Within scope of this course, the student will be able to understand main principles of disease development, their clinical manifestation and their impact on patient.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- explain general principles of the developement of pathological changes in the body
- employ principles of general pathology in particular organs and organ systems
- understand connections between pathological changes in organs and clinical issues - Syllabus
- Introduction, examination methods in pathology, causes of diseases (physical, chemical, infectious, internal).
- Regressive changes(necrosis, atrophy, dystrophy).
- Inflammation (mechanisms, non-specific and specific inflammation).
- Local circulation disorders (thrombosis, embolia, oedema, hemorrhage), progressive changes (hypertrophy, hyperplasia).
- Tumors (benign and malignant, epitelial, mesenchymal, others).
- Pathology of cardiovascular system (atherosclerosis, ischemic cardiac disease, diseases of myocardium, arteries and veins).
- Pathology of haematopoesis and blood, haematopoietic tumors (hemoblastomas, hemoblases).
- Pathology of respiration system (inflammation, tumors).
- Pathology of kidneys and urinary tract (inflammation, tumors).
- Pathology of oesophagus, stomach and intestine(ulcer disease, inflammation, tumors).
- Pathology of liver, gallbladder and pancreas(hepatitis, cirrhosis, tumors).
- Pathology of male and female genital tract incl. mammary gland.
- Pathology of nervous system (circulation disorders, inflammations, tumors).
- Pathology of endocrine system (thyroid and suprarenal gland disease).
- Pathology of bones and joints (arthritis, arthrosis, bone tumors).
- Skin pathology (most common inflamatory disease - eczema, psoriasis, bullous disease; skin tumors).

- Teaching methods
- Lectures with presentation of the most common pathological changes on photos. Optional attendance of autopsy is possible.
- Assessment methods
- The exam is written. Students respond 20 questions of multiple choice test. More than half correct answers is necessary to pass. The lectured topics are parts of exam questions; therefore, the lecture attendance is extremely important because lectures are the only form of education of this sophisticated subject.
