Course objectives
After completion of the course student: operates light microscope; understands the basics gene engineering or the methods of karyotyping; is able to evaluate the risk of hereditary diseases in a patient on the basis of assigned family anamnesis of this disease; is able to interpret elementary molecular screening methods for some hereditary or microbial diseases; is able to design and evaluate simple biological experiment. Student is also able to apply this knowledge and skills in following subjects.
Syllabus
  • Microscopic structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
  • Cell cycle. Mitosis. Meiosis.
  • DNA diagnostics. Analysis of human genotype.
  • DNA cloning.
Literature
    required literature
  • Aktuální protokoly k praktickým cvičením jsou dostupné pouze v elektronické podobě na stránkách informačního systému MU (ISu): Studijní materiály předmětu BLKMB011c
Teaching methods
laboratory practise, class discussion + homeworks Students will individually study the topics and fill in the following protocols: DNA replication. Expresssion of genetic information. Human karyotype. Autosomal and gonosomal inheritance.
Assessment methods
All practical classes are mandatory.
Students will bring their own writing materials, scissors and printed protocol. Download protocol for each practical class from the Study materials, print it and study it in advance. Lab shoes, lab coats and disposable gloves are not required.
Requirements for course completion: full attendance in the classes, activity in the classes, all protocols completed and checked, even the four protocols intended for homework (DNA replication; Expression of genetic information; Human karyotype; Autosomal and gonosomal inheritance).
Potential absences are addressed individually and must be excused by the Office for Studies within 5 working days from the beginning of the absence and introduced in the IS. Student is required to write an essay in the length of 2 pages on a given topic in case of excused absence. Find the instructions for essay writing in the Course-related instructions in the IS, bring the essay printed to the teacher who specified the topic and be ready to answer the teacher's questions regarding the topic.
