Course objectives
At the end of the course students are able to understand main pharmacological mechanisms of drug actions leading to therapeutic, adverse and toxic effects of drugs and eventually their combinations. They will know what the principles of drug prescription are and what information is available in the Pharmacopoea, and how to make calculations of basic pharmacokinetic parameters. They be able to recognize main drug classes and pharmacological profiles of representative drugs from groups of drugs selected in the curriculum.
Syllabus
  • 1.LECTURE: Definition of pharmacology and basic terminology. Drug classification. Mechanisms of drug effects. Basic pharmacokinetics.
  • 2.LECTURE: Factors responsible for variation in drug response. Adverse drug reactions. Drug interactions. Research and development of drugs, clinical evaluation of drugs, registration.
  • 3.LECTURE: Pharmacology of autonomic nervous system. Receptors of sympathetic and parasympathetic systems and possibilities of pharmacological intervention.
  • 4.LECTURE: Pharmacology of allergic states. Histamine, H1-antagonists - antihistamine drugs. Glucocorticoids. Antiasthmatic drugs.

Teaching methods
The curriculum enables attendance at lectures lead by teachers of pharmacology.
Assessment methods
During the studying the students have to prove active knowledge of pharmacology acquired. Students have to pass the exam: final written multiple-choice test. In the Final Exam students are asked to answer to multiple-choice questions. Only 1 correct answer is possible to each question. The test contains 20 questions generated randomly for each single student. One point is granted for each correctly answered question. The summary of the score obtained is evaluated as follows: mark A = 91-100% out of the maximum score; B = 81-90%; C = 71-80%; D = 61-70%; E = 51-60%; F = failed with the score below 50% of the maximum score.
