- The course is only offered to the students of the study fields the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- Nutritive therapist (programme LF, B-SZ)
- General Medicine (eng.) (programme LF, M-VL)
- General Medicine (programme LF, M-VL) (2)
- Course objectives
- Seminars are complementary to Medical chemistry lecture (VSLC011p). The knowledge of general, inorganic, and (bio)organic chemistry, required in the end of VCLC011p, is thoroughly practiced during Medical chemistry seminars.
- Syllabus
- Mole and molar quantities; concentration of solutions, basic laboratory calculations.
- 1st test (10 Q- Basic laboratory calculations.) Dissociation of electrolytes, activity of ions, ionic strength; osmotic pressure, osmolality.
- Acid-base reactions – pH of acid, base, and salt solutions, buffers, calculations.
- Intermolecular forces and adsorption. Tensides.
- 2nd test (12 Q- Electrolytes, calculations of pH, hydrolysis of salts, buffers, osmotic pressure, intermolecular forces, tensides) Reaction kinetics, the law of chemical equilibrium.
- Gibbs energy. Oxidation-reduction reactions, electrode potentials, electrochemical cell potentials and the Gibbs energy change.
- 3rd test (12 Q- Reaction kinetics, equilibrium, Gibbs energy, oxidation-reduction) Organic compounds – Part I.
- Organic compounds – Part II.
- Organic compounds – Part III. Latine nomenclature.
- 4th test (18 Q, organic compounds, nomenclature, structures, reactions, Latine nomenclature) Biochemically important heterocyclic compounds and their derivatives.
- Chemistry of saccharides.
- 5th test (12 Q-Heterocycles, saccharides.) Chemistry of lipids and steroids.
- Properties of amino acids. Proteins – secondary and tertiary structures.

- Teaching methods
- Class discussions based of materials in the seminar textbook.
- Assessment methods
- First condition is full attendance in all lessons (or making up all missing and justified lessons). Five short tests are written during the semester. The total number of questions in all tests is 64, each correct answer is counted as one point. Students that will obtain 49 points or more during the semester are not obliged to write the credit test. The other students will write the credit test with the 30 questions in the last week of the semester. The limit for passing the credit test is 14 points. Students that will not fulfill this limit will be allowed to repeat the test once. Remedial dates for writing the credit test will be scheduled. Students that will not fulfill this requirement will not be given the course-unit credit. Obtaining of course-unit credits of practices and seminars is the pre-requisite for registration to the examination of Medical chemistry and for enrollment of Biochemistry in the Spring semester.
- Language of instruction
