Course objectives
Lecture provides students with the knowledge required to complete orientation in the field of refractive errors of the eye and the possibilities of their correction in childhood. Practically students verify acquired knowledge in exercises in the examination rooms and optical laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine and pediatric ophthalmology department at FNB. The aim is a comprehensive knowledge of the issue of refractive errors of the eye and all circumstances related to them including the examination of refractive errors and their correction. The subject also includes familiarization with the necessary theory regarding contact lenses, which at the Centre for Teaching and practically verified so that after passing the subject exam were able to handle their own practical fitting including the selection of the most suitable contact lenses.
Syllabus
  • Visus checking for distance and near. Ophthalmoscopy. Objective methods of refraction surveys. Determine and verify the proper correction. Subjective examination methods for refraction. Determining muscle balance, binocular vision. Familiarization with the department for contact lens fitting and servicing equipment used in fitting process, custom contact lenses fitting. Basic parameters of contact lenses, optical power determination and its measurement at soft CL, hard CL, changing of those parameters in the process of hydration and dehydration. Contact lenses materials development. General requirements for CL material, specific material characteristics. Comparison of contact lens materials: RGP, hydrogel and silikonhydrogel. Development of methods and current methods of CL production. Types of CL fitting - theoretical, parameter selection and fitting of spheric, toric, cosmetic, prosthetic, therapeutic lens. Patient education, follow-up examination of CL wearer. Indications and contraindications of CL fitting, eye damage by CL.Continuous CL wearing, risks. Correction of presbyopia using CL. Management systems of CL.Specificity and effects of drugs in CL carriers. Corneal degenerative diseases.Stenopeic hole principle used in optometric practice. Innovations in contactology, Working with specialized magazine, including presentation and discussion.
