- Course objectives
- Students will get knowledge about general principles on which drugs acts, about their pharmacokinetics, adverse effects and interactions. At the end of the course they will be able to recognize main drug classes and pharmacological profiles of representative drugs from groups of drugs selected in the curriculum.

- Syllabus
- 1. seminar - Introduction to the study of Pharmacology. Historical aspects of pharmacology. Pharmacology - definitions, terminology, subspecializations. The active substance, pharmacon - drug, drug classification. Effective pharmacotherapy.
- 2. seminar - Survey of drug dosage forms and routes of application including stomatologic drug forms. Pharmacopoiea. Legislative and provisions of narcotic and psychotropic substances.
- 3. seminar - Basic pharmacokinetics. Pharmacokinetic processes and parameters.
- 4. seminar - Mechanisms of drug effects. Receptor theory. Factors influencing drug effects. Adverse effects of drugs. Drug interactions.
- 5. seminar - Local anaesthesia focused on stomatology. Vasoconstrictive additives in dentistry.
- 6. seminar - General anaesthesia and premedication prior to general anaesthesia in dentistry.
- 7. seminar - Opioid analgesics. Classification of psychotropics, use in dentistry. Anxiolytics and hypnosedatives.
- 8. seminar - Non-opioid analgesics. Non-steroid antiinflammatory drugs.
- 9. seminar - Pharmacology of allergic states and anaphylaxis. Sympathomimetics used in acute states and asthma.
- 10. seminar - Pharmacology of hemostasis.
- 11. seminar - Antibiotics and chemotherapeutics, local antivirotics.
- 12. seminar - Antimykotics. Disinfectants and antiseptics.
- 13. seminar - Drugs for treatment and prevention of diseases of hard tooth tissues. Drugs for treatment of oral mucosa and parodontium. Drugs used in salivation impair.

- Teaching methods
- In seminars are students introduced by a pharmacology teacher into deeper knowledge about topics stated in curriculum. Focus is on discussion with teacher following individual study activities of students at home. Videos and powerpoint presentations are commonly used in seminars. Seminars are self-learning supplemented by 2 hours.
- Assessment methods
- During the studying the students have to prove active knowledge of pharmacology acquired. The students have to pass colloquium on topics studied during the semester: final written multiple-choice test. In the test students are asked to answers to multiple-choice questions. Only 1 correct answer is possible for each question. The test contains 20 questions. One point is granted for each correctly answered question. To pass the test student needs at least 60% of the maximum score.
