- Course objectives
- Subject Biochemistry follows secondary school chemistry and biochemistry broadens the subject considerably to the level required for the study of successive subjects. The aim of the subject is to provide a comprehensive view of the basic metabolic processes in the human body related to the functioning of the human organism. It acquaints students with basic knowledge of metabolism of basic nutrients, especially amino acids and disorders of their metabolism, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleotides.Students acquire knowledge about biological material for clinical-biochemical examination, methods and techniques of sampling, marking of samples, their storage and sending for processing to clinical-biochemical laboratories and with reference values. It acquaints with basic knowledge of clinical hematology. It provides information about basic and special examination methods in hematology.
- Learning outcomes
- After the completition of the subject student will understand physico-chemical processes important for biological systems. He is able to explain basic principles of nutrient metabolism, discusses the principles of regulation. Understands how energy is generated, used, and stored by the various organs of the body.Describes the biochemical proceses typical for main organs and tissues in the body (heart, liver, kidney muscle, nerve tissue). He is able to explain basic principles of homeostasis. He is familiar with the effects of major hormones and the principle of their action through receptors. Characterizes the composition and function of the main body fluids. Understands the processes of hemocoagulation.

- Introduction to biochemistry of human organism. Proteins in living organisms. Enzymes. Hemoglobin. Nutrient catabolism. Energy production. Vitamins. Carbohydrate metabolism. Lipid metabolism. Metabolism of amino acids and proteins. Hormones in the human body and their functions. Metabolism under different conditions. Homeostasis of water and ions. Sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphates. Acid-base balance of organism. Regulation of metabolism. Nervous system. Receptors of hormones and neurotransmitters. Nucleic acids. Expression of genetic information. Biochemistry of liver. Metabolism of Fe. Connective tissue biochemistry. Biochemistry of kidneys. Biochemistry of muscle. Blood biochemistry. Biological material for clinical-biochemical analyzes, method of collection and processing.

- Teaching methods
- Teaching form are lectures, 2 hours per week.
- Assessment methods
- The course is concluded by the oral examination.Examination is composed of two parts. First part is a simple test on a computer, the second part is oral.The test includes 25 basal questions from the whole content of the recommended book, including chapters 1-4, calculations of concentration, pH and osmolarity. Only those students who gain 14 correct answers at a minimum will be permitted to sit for the oral examination.The model test is available on IS MUNI in the ROPOT section.
