- Course objectives
- The main objectives of the course are:
- understanding the chemical composition, structure and properties of the main cellular components
- understanding the basic processes in the cell; and understanding the principles of pathology of these processes in cancer and genetic diseases
- understanding the basic principles of heredity - Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- describe the composition, structure and functions of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
- Explain the principles of intercellular communication and cell differentiation
- Explain the principles of regulation and purpose of cell division (mitosis and meiosis)
- explain basic principles of heredity and nature of human genetic diseases, describe basic methods of gene diagnostics

- Week 2: Biopolymers II – nucleic acids and DNA replication
- Week 3: From a gene to protein – the expression of genetic information
- Week 4: Cell architecture and functions of eukaryotic cells

- two-hour lecture with discussion per week
- Assessment methods
- The course is completed with a written examination test with 60 questions (30 multiple choice questions, where negative marking applies for incorrect answers + 30 questions where the student chooses from true/false).
