- Course objectives
- The course will enable students to gain a basic understanding of medically important microbes with an emphasis on microbes inhabiting the genital organs, affecting fertility and possibly the outcome of in vitro fertilization.
- Learning outcomes
- The graduate will know the most important medically important microbes, diagnostic methods, decontamination methods and antimicrobials, explain the use of antimicrobials, explain the difference between normal microbial flora, transient findings, contaminants and pathogens in various organs/organ systems.
The graduate will list the most important pathogens: - invading the female genital organs - invading the male genital organs - sexually transmitted although not invading the genital organs - invading the embryo, fetus and newborn - affecting fertility; briefly list the most common pathogens in other organs/organ systems.
The graduate will explain the basics of microbiological examination indication, collection and transport of samples for infections of various organs and organ systems in various organs/organ systems; interpret at a basic level simple microbiological test results for infections of various organs/organ systems. For the purposes of this review, organs and organ systems include: - respiratory tract including lungs - gastrointestinal tract including liver, gallbladder and pancreas - excretory system - nervous system - bloodstream, bones, muscles and various tissues - skin, eyes, external ear - Syllabus
