Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the development of literature for young people, the basic genres of children's literature and important authors so that they are aware of value shifts and can independently choose literary works for literary and educational work.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to connect the development of Czech literature for children and youth with social events and artistic context. They are able to characterize individual development stages and to explain their periodization milestones. They realize the connection between literary creation for children and adults. Literary critical competencies they demonstrate by formulating their own evaluation criteria when assessing a literary work.
Syllabus
  • 1. Prerequisites for the emergence of literature for youth (LFY) in the context of Czech literature. 2. Genre differentiation, the position of folklore in the reading of children and youth, the issue of folktales. 3. Development of poetry for children and youth in the 19th century and its contemporary editions. 4. LFY from the beginning of the 20th century to 1945, the so-called struggle for the fairy tale, changes in the view of youth literature and its critical reflection; social themes and the reaction to World War I in works for children and youth. 5. LFY from 1945 to the end of the 1950s, developmental discontinuity after 1948, new editorial concept of SNDK, children's work and ideology. 6. LFY in the 1960s, the value stratification of children's and youth work, its experimental breakthroughs. 7. LFY in the period of normalization. 8. Changes in LFY from the 1990s to the present, genre syncretisation, breakdown of traditional boundaries in LFY. 9. - 10. News from the field of Czech and world LFY.

Teaching methods
The lectures in the form of selected topics cover the production of Czech literature for children and young adults from the beginning up to present. The topics are organised into sections of poetry, prose (exile literature included) and a brief outline of secondary literature. It brings also an outline of the most significant genres of literature for children and young adults.
Assessment methods
Students will present outcomes of their work in written form which will help them to enhance their ability to think critically and develop their individual style. Emphasis is put on students’ ability to evaluate a particular literary piece, compare it in the context of the contemporary Czech and world literary production and defend and formulate their views with precision and professional insight. Course is concluded with a credit. Requirements: A review of a work of a Czech writer for children and youth published after the year 2020 (included).
