- Course objectives
- The basic aim of the subject is to reveal the relationship between the development of modern society and the change of forms of state organization.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course students:
Understand the continuity of the development of modern society
They can assess the positives and negatives of each stage in relation to nationalism and other social phenomena
Learn to read, analyse and interpret professional texts
Deepen their ability to relate the lecture material to their own interpretation of texts
Understand the causes of current risks ("crisis of the contemporary family", "crisis of identities", global crisis) and understand the logic of a proper problem solution - Syllabus
- 1) The emergence of modern society and its establishment in the Euro-American space
- 2) The relationship of modern society to nationalism, the concept of nationalism, the positives and negatives of nationalism, the consequences of nationalism
- 3) Concepts of nation, national identity, ethnic identity
- 4) Czech national identity - its origins and current form
- 5) Family as a basic social unit and its transformation during the individual stages of society. Challenges and risks of contemporary family.
- 6) Postmodern society and its current risks, A risk society, the crisis of identities
- 7) The Holocaust and modern genocides as examples of possible risks of modern society, the topic of the Holocaust of Roma and Sinti in our territory and the question of the meaning of memorials in the contemporary context

- Regular study and reading of assigned literature Active participation in lessons and discussions Seminar work in groups and its presentation Assessment: Relevance of information and sources. Ability to present your prepared topic as a well-organised argument. Responding to the questions posed. Ability to relate the topic to related topics in the course, the literature read and the contemporary context of life. A written final examination with open-ended essay-type questions (answering the questions set, arguing on the basis of professional information, readings, placing the topic in the context of contemporary times and the social teaching profession, etc.).
