Course objectives
The course aims to raise students‘ awareness and sensitivity to specific aspects of (namely written) communication in the professional community. In this course students learn about the subject of educational research, how theories are created and tested, what types of research there are, how research is designed and conducted, its stages, how to define a research problem, sample, choice of methods, data collection and interpretation.
Learning outcomes
Upon finishing the course, the students will be able to understand terminology related to methodology; to design their own (e.g., action) research project for the purposes of their diploma thesis, inlucing the selection of specific research methods and techniques of data collection and analysis; to understand the rules and ethics of academic communication; interpret research results; write diploma thesis.
Syllabus
  • 1. General principles of the use of research in pedagogical practice, philosophical background, types of research.
  • 2. Searching professional sources, working with studies, structuring of thesis.
  • 3. Theoretical background, current state of the art, APA and the problem of plagiarism.
  • 4. Design, data collection and analysis methods.
  • 5. Design-based research, action research in the teaching profession.
  • 6. Interview, objectives and sub-objectives/research questions, interview questions, data transcription.
  • 7. Data coding, sorting and analysis.
  • 8. Data description and interpretation of results.
  • 9. Discussion, ethics, validity and reliability, triangulation.
  • 10. Database search, use of AI.
