Course objectives
The aim of this subject is to prepare student to be able to develop child's pre-reading literacy, mainly then for work with children, who have postponed beggining of school attandance, with children who struggle in pre-reading literacy activities, and who need support in this specific area. Students will be able to determine difficulties, compensate them by specific activities, and by these steps to secure fluent transit to higher education level.
Learning outcomes
After completing this subject, student will be able to: - Define basic concepts in pre-reading literacy; - Describe rule of using activatinig methods in pre-reading literacy; - Design a set of controlled and semi-controlled activities that will lead to pre-reading literacy development in preschoolers; - Diagnose level of precondition for achieving reading and writing skills; - Design an intervention plan for children that struggle in partial area; - Explain basics of main reading and writing teaching methods
Syllabus
  • 1. Reading and writing in today's society and culture; influence of these skills on school success; 2. Reading and writing as a part of functional literacy; 3. Trend in developing pre-reading literacy in preschool; 4. Developing pre-reading literacy in children from minorities; 5. Importance of family background; 6. Development of vocabulary and fonics; 7. Development of listening and sight; 8. Development of skills needed for writing; 9. Research in pre-reading literacy; 10. Preparation of pro-reading rich environment; 11. Child's abilities to read and write and it's diagnostics; 12. Child that struggles in reading and writing - it's diagnostics; 13. Reading and writing teaching methods in primary education.
