Course objectives
The aim of the developmental psychology is directed to the understanding of the main principals and regularity in the process of mental development focusing on cognitive, motor, emotional, moral and personal progress. The course focuses on the dynamic changes in each of the individual developmental stages, the influence and impact of partial factors and the difficulties in adaptability,upbringing and education. At the end of this course, the students should be able to:; understand and tell to an individual developmental stages of the child; interpret the knowledge about the changes in development of the individual psychic functions; use the information about the changes in mental development in a special approach to children education.
Syllabus
  • 1. Developmental psychology in the system of psychological disciplines; the main factors of human development.
  • 2. Developmental change; critical and sensitive stages; periodization of human development.
  • 3. Developmental challenges and crises (Erikson); cognitive development (Piaget); moral development (Kohlberg).
  • 4. Early development: prenatal stage, newborn, infant and toddler.
  • 5. Attachment theory (Bowlby, Ainsworth); concept of psychological deprivation in childhood (Matějček).
  • 6. Pre-school age: emotional, social and cognitive development; game, drawing, school readiness.
  • 7. School age: emotional, social and cognitive development; school failure.
  • 8. Adolescence: emotional, social and cognitive development; formation and changes in self-concept; identity development and identity statuses (Marcia).
  • 9. Adulthood: social criteria; aspects of adult identity; concept of emerging adulthood (Arnett).
  • 10. Disorders of psychological development; diagnostics of development.
