Course objectives
Gender plays a critical role in human behavior and the structure of society. Unlike sex that is biologically determined, gender is constructed within a cultural and historical context. Gender is not a single area of study but encompasses a wide range of disciplines (e.g. history, philosophy, psychology, sociology, linguistics). In this course we will focus on categories that could be relevant to you as students of English language and literature, that is gender and language, literature, culture and pedagogy. The essays assigned for the course will introduce you to the current gender debate and hopefully will provoke you to formulate your own opinions on gender images and issues.
