Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to a communicative appproach in the study of English syntax. Main topics: functions of language with regards to their role in the act of communication, speech act theory, communicative sentence types, sentence patterns in communication, grammatical cohesion, register variation, information processing.
Syllabus
  • 1. Normative syntax vs. Communicative syntax.Variation in language. 2. Language functions and their implementation in sentence structure. 3. Choices in the act of communication. 4. Speech acts. Conversational principles: co-operation and politeness. 5. Linking and grammatical cohesion. 6. Information processing.Functional sentence perspective. 7. Formal and informal language. 8. Personal and impersonal language. 9. Written vs, spoken language. 10.Dialectal vaiation.
