Course objectives
This subject includes lexicology (about Czech vocabulary and its classification) and word forming in Czech language. In the lexicology the students study the structure of Czech vocabulary, its classification and the tendency of the development of the Czech vocabulary, the loanwords in the Czech vocabulary. Theoretical knowledge is applied in the work in the seminary during the text analysis. The word forming presupposes knowledge of the basic terminology and methods of formation of the word in the contemporary Czech: suffix, prefix, basic part of the word. It is presupposed that the students have finished the subjects Contemporary Czech language I (phonetics, phonology) and Contemporary Czech Language II (morphology).
Syllabus
  • Basic terminology of the lexicology and word formation in the Czech language. Word and names. Types of names: words, phraseologism, groups of words. Vocabulary in the literary language, spoken Czech, in the dialects and social dialects, in the slang, professional speech and in the argot; expressive lexical units; frequency of the lexical units in the Czech vocabulary and in the various styles of the Czech language. Classification of the vocabulary from the development and historian point of view. Origin of the lexical units. Analysis of the lexical units in the authentically texts. Extending of the vocabulary. Loanwords. Semantic relations in the vocabulary. Synonymy, its function in the texts. Antonyms, the types of antonyms. Semantic relations in the texts. Hyponyms, hyperonyms. Proper names. Typology of proper names. Proper names in Czech language teaching in primary school. Lexical analysis. Word forming in Czech language. Basic terminology. Motivated and non-motivated words. Types of word forming in Czech language, their character and productivity. Semantic categories in Word forming, the suffix- and prefix types in the semantic categories. The word forming by suffixes - substantives, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs. Semantic categories. Word forming by the terminations. Word forming by prefixes. Composition. Abbreviation. Morphemic analysis of word structure.
