- Course objectives
- Course goals: - to provide a very short and general introduction to the American literature of the 20th century - to introduce basic primary literature (fiction, poetry, and drama), main artistic movements (modernism and postmodernism), and main secondary literature (theory)

- Course outline: Feb. 23 Topic: teaching practice Reading: the moodlinka materials March 2 Topic: An introduction to modernism Reading: Faulkner March 9 Topic: An introduction to postmodernism Reading: Barthelme March 16 Topic: An introduction to the 20th century American drama Reading: Albee The book review to be submitted (worth 40 points of your final grade). March 23 Topic: Ethnic writers Reading: Louise Erdrich March 30: The essay to be submitted (worth 40 points of your final grade).
- Assessment methods (in Czech)
- Course requirements: 1) Write a book review on a book by a modernist writer, your own choice, published for the first time in the 1920s or 1930s (Faulkner, Hemingway, Steinbeck, F.S. Fitzgerald, Dos Passos). Evaluate the structure of the novel, the story, the use of psychology, reflections of the period, the language etc. Find the relevance of the novel for the contemporary Czech reader. Use quotations from primary materials, list bibliography. To be submitted by March 16, 2006. The late penalty is 1 point per day to a maximum of 7 days. A medical certificate or equivalent document must be presented for the late assignment. 2) Write an essay on postmodernism in literature: focus on one artist, or one decade, or specific movement within postmodernism the choice is yours. Quote the essay by Barry Lewis. An artist may be represented by Kurt Vonnegut, Donald Barthelme, E. L. Doctorow, Joseph Heller, J. C. Oates, Erica Jong, Alice Walker, Leslie Marmon Silko, Tom Robbins, Don DeLillo, and Paul Auster your personal selection. Focus on book(s) by the young writer, written at the beginning of his/her career. Consult your choice with your teacher. Use quotations from primary materials, list bibliography. To be submitted a week after your classes finish (March 30, 2006). The late penalty is 1 point per day to a maximum of 7 days. A medical certificate or equivalent document must be presented for the late assignment.
