Course objectives
The students learn about the substance of a dialect as one of the existing forms of a language, about the process of their origin, criteria of their classification and about the classification of Czech dialects at present.
Syllabus
  • 1 Structural and non-structural language forms; analysis of their mutual relationship. 2 Definition of a dialect, dialectological terminology; reference literature. 3 Reasons why the languages divided into dialects; geographical and social dialects. Problems of disappearance of dialects. Levelling of dialects. The present state. 4 Emergence of dialectic boundaries (isoglosses), their changes. 5 Methodology of dialectological research, transcription of dialectological texts, maps. Dialect monographs and dictionaries. 6 Language geography. 7 The goals of dialectology; dialectology and teaching Czech. Analyses of mistakes in written works of the pupils with respect to their dialectic background. 8 Exkursion.
