Course objectives
At the end of the course, students will be able: 1. to explain the etymological origin of the modern Czech words concerning culturally historical features in the basic areas of vocabulary (family, society, housing, eating habits, clothing, hygiene...); 2. to understand the development of Czech in the context following the Indo-European and Proto-Slavonic developments, especially in their lexical stage; 3. to define the object of interest of cognitive linguistics and to explain its methods, using chosen findings related largely to the Old Czech vocabulary.

  • 1. Medieval society in the Old Czech vocabulary; 2. Family and family affairs in the Old Czech vocabulary; 3. Housing, dwelling in the Old Czech vocabulary; 4. Clothing and eating habits in the Old Czech vocabulary; 6. Hygiene in the Old Czech vocabulary; 7. Offensive words, verbal aggression; 8. Time perception in Middle Ages and related lexicon; 9. Colours not only in the Old Czech vocabulary.

A lecture combined with subsequent discussions on the professional issues of the course.
Assessment methods
For successful completion of the course must be: 1. comply written test, where students are free answers the questions. The test is evaluated; 2. final project seminar - essay on a given topic; 3. Study of suggested literature. Detailed requirements are available in each term in Study Materials of the course in the Information System MU, the folder Learning Materials.
