Cíle předmětu
The course aims to:
consolidate and enhance the knowledge of devices characteristic of the English style of science;
practise the ability to formulate an argument, to discuss, to use relevant sources critically and to draw conclusions;
It will teach students how to:
select, describe and apply appropriate research methods and procedures;
utilise academic skills such as classifying, analysis and synthesis, comparison, summarising, generalisation;
improve work with sources (use of quotations and paraphrases, making reference) and visual devices.
Výstupy z učení
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
use the linguistic devices characteristic of the style of science adequately;
distinguish and choose relevant research methods and procedures, describe them and use them in their own work;
know the lexical and syntactic means related to analysis, comparison, classification, quantification, summary, conclusion, etc.;
write a formally appropriate academic text on one of the topics related to the courses in the Master´s programme (including an abstract, a list of references and visuals);
transfer the knowledge into teaching writing in English lessons and work with relevant academic genres.
Osnova
  • 1. Basic features of the style of science - a review.
  • 2. Formality, impersonality, explicitness and objectivity of academic texts.
  • 3. Connectors and other cohesive devices.
  • 4. Formal and abstract verbs.
  • 5. Nominalisation, multi-word terms.
  • 6. Qualifying expressions. Adjectives and adverbials in the style of science. Quantifiers.
  • 7. Syntactic devices: relative and adverbial clauses, non-finite constructions.
  • 8. Methods of research and science (induction, deduction, analysis, synthesis, comparison, observation, description, experiment, etc.).
  • 9. Formulation of an argument; discussion, confrontation with sources.
  • 10. Classification, summary, conclusion.
  • 11. Quotation and paraphrase, compiling a list of references. Footnotes/endnotes.
  • 12. Visual devices in academic texts (graphs, charts, diagrams, tables).

Výukové metody
Teaching methods:
- explanation, practice and discussion in class;
- observation of selected phenomena during teaching practice;
- home study and written assignment.
Metody hodnocení
Completion prerequisites:
- attendance - minimum 80%;
- active participation in seminars;
- seminar essay - a piece of academic text, due on May 27, 2019. Pass mark: 70%.
