- Course objectives
- The objective of the course is to present the basic knowledge of the structure and function of various body systems. The course presents synthetic information from the field of medical disciplines adapted to the needs of the students of the Faculty of Education. These findings are combined with the principles of good educational practice, with an emphasis on the teacher’s independent and responsible decision making in case a child’s health or life is at risk. An emphasis is on a holistic approach to health, timely recognition of any disorders, and preventive measures.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course the students will:
Be able to describe and explain the morphology and physiology of the human body (skeletal, locomotor, cardiovascular, pulmonary and gastrointestinal systems), with an emphasis on the anatomy and physiology of the child,
Be able to identify the most common disorders in the structure and function of regulatory systems, and understand the implications of these disorders for the functioning of an individual, especially in childhood,
Be able to use the knowledge in educating children,
Understand specific needs of a child’s organism. - Syllabus
- 1. Locomotor system (skeleton – shape of bones, internal structure of bones, growth and development of bones, bone connections, description of the skeleton; muscles – function of the muscle system, structure of skeletal muscles, innervation, contraction, growth and development of muscles, muscle groups; selected variations in the shape and function of the locomotor system); 2. Blood and blood circulation (internal environment of the organism, blood structure – plasma, blood elements, properties of blood – blood functions, blood coagulation, sedimentation, blood groups, significance of blood in prevention against infections, immunity, vaccination, allergy; blood circulation – small and large blood circulation, structure of the heart, foetal circulation, nutrition of the heart, activity of the heart, heart rate, heart volumes, blood vessels, physiology of blood circulation, tissue fluid, lymph, spleen; selected blood and blood circulation diseases); 3. Respiratory system (structure and activity of the respiratory system, upper respiratory tract, lower respiratory tract, lungs, breathing movements, breathing and transmission of gasses, developmental peculiarities of the respiratory system, selected disorders of the respiratory system); 4. Digestive system (anatomy and physiology of the digestive system – structure of the wall of the digestive system, structure and function of the digestive organs, digestion of sugars, fats, proteins; 5. Conversion of substances and energy – metabolism, energy conversion, basal metabolism, nutrition; selected nutrition and digestion disorders); 6. Excretory system (anatomy and physiology of the excretory system – selected disorders of the structure and function of the excretory system); 7. Reproductive system (anatomy and function of the reproductive system, development of the gonads, male reproductive organs, female reproductive organs, menstrual and ovulation cycle, selected disorders of the structure and function of the reproductive system); 8. Endocrine system (function of the endocrine glands, overview of the endocrine glands, hormone regulation, selected disorders of the endocrine glands); 9. Sensory system (function of the sensory system, receptors, skin – structure and function, body temperature regulation, selected skin diseases; vision, selected visual disorders; hearing – selected hearing disorders, vestibular system, proprioceptors); 10. and 11. Nervous system (structure and activity of various parts of the nervous system, central nervous system, peripheral nerves, physiology of the nervous system, rhythms, laterality, selected disorders of the nervous system); 12. Infectious diseases (basic concepts, fundamentals of microbiology, overview of common infectious diseases – droplet infection, food-borne diseases, parasites). Content of seminars: 1. Skeletal system – bone models, skeleton; 2. Newborn skull, adult skull – female/male, determining skull age, gender differences. Craniometry; 3. Pelvic arch, gender differences. Pelvimetry; 4. Human spine from an ontogenetic perspective. Spinal examination; 5. Simple examination of heart function and blood circulation. Minute cardiac volume. Heart rate, blood pressure values; 6. Breathing movements – differences in breathing – children, men, women. Breathing frequency at rest and after physical activity. Minute breathing volume. Inspiratory and expiratory apnoea. Stange’s test; 7. Examples of digestive processes – salivary and pancreatic amylase, proof of enzyme activity; 8. Osmotic and oncotic pressure and its significance in the human organism, causes of hypertension, causes of atherosclerosis; 9. Menstrual and ovulation cycle – contraceptive methods and principles; 10. Examination - taste, vision, hearing; 11. Nerve reflexes. Laterality tests; 12. Museum of anatomy – summary.
